Your Condition Is Your Calling

So many times in life, and in today’s society, we are forced to think of what’s ahead. In high school, you are constantly looking forward to college. In college, you are encouraged to start thinking of your post-college plans as a sophomore. When you’re dating, you constantly think forward to getting married or engaged (guilty!). Once you get married, you start planning for kids (not there yet- but it’s just my guess :)

It’s great to have some concept of future plans, but it is our calling to live in the condition in which God put us in. I have always thought of a calling as something that God is saying you should do in the future. Which to some aspect, is true. Last year I felt a strong calling to go on a mission trip- so I did. However, you calling is also where you are at this current moment. God has you here, in this very circumstance for some reason. It fits in His plan. And you need to stop thinking of what’s next ALL of the time and listen to what God wants us to do in the now.

I’m more guilty of this than anyone. I am constant thinking of getting engaged. Right now, that is not my calling. My calling is to be dating David in a long distance relationship. I can’t tell you why, and I would be lying if I told you I wished it weren’t the case. But I need to stop pushing what’s next and take advantage of why God has me in this situation.

There is so much growing you can do if you live in the moment and really listen to what God is telling you.

Live in the moment

I felt that God was asking me the other month why I was so focused on the next step of my life. But here is a thought-

When God is asking you a question, pay attention. He already knows the answer…He is trying to tell you something.

Preach it sister!
Seriously, i think we can become so OBSESSED with the next day, week, month, YEARS that we loose sight of the beauty and incredibly significant lessons God is teaching us in the NOW. Look at Jesus, while he was planning ahead and everything had a purpose for ultimately our salvation, He lived each moment to glorify Himself and God. And HE is our example!
Thanks for sharing! :)

Thanks so much for sharing. I'm super passionate about living life in the moment, so much so that I started a blog about it!

Our journey will never make sense until we see it through the eye's of our loving Father who created it all!

Gosh, Susan! Your post couldn't have better timing! Derek and I have been CONSTANTLY wrapped up in "planning ahead" or "getting to the next step", that we're missing the RIGHT NOW more than ever.

With a little one that's about to turn TWO is just a short month, living like we are is just unacceptable! You've made me realize that I need to stop missing what's happening right now. This very moment, I just wiped my entire schedule clean, and I will be playing with my daughter as soon as she wakes up until she goes to bed! Just wish hubby wasn't in school so late so he could be here with us!

THANK YOU!

You know, sometimes I think it's just our society (America) that thinks this way. It might be nice to live away from it for awhile and see if our perspective is changed??

Wow... This is powerful! And challenging... and convicting... and good... Thank you so much - I really needed to hear this... God has me where I'm at RIGHT NOW for a reason... This is part of my calling, part of His plan. Thank you!
PS: I'm a new follower... and I'm so glad I found you!

Oh my goodness....If I didn't know better I would think that you would have read my journal!

I am ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS looking ahead to what is next. Then, God reminds me to "bloom where I'm planted", to use today wisely, in short, to "live in the condition God has put me in" as you put it.

We certainly need to be looking ahead and making wise choices that will keep us in His will for our tomorrow. BUT many of us (ME!) take this looking and begin dwelling in the future instead.

Although I am farther down the "life path" than you (read: I'm 37), I still have issues with this as well. Thanks for the timely reminder to stop and appreciate what IS instead of what is to come. Time is precious, and goes by far too fast.

Jessica

p.s. just stumbled across your blog recently, and noticed that you are also a JMU grad....GO DUKES!!!! (Bachelor of Music, 1996 here....cannot believe it's been that long!)

This is so true. I constantly find myself wishing for future times instead of being content in the situation I am in right now. Thank you so much for the reminder!

Something we all need to think about more often! I am way guilty, I am constantly thinking of life after I'm done with school, that time is flying so quickly I'm realizing I'm not enjoying the time I have now in a gorgeous place!
Wonderful post lovely!! <3
